This elegant detached Victorian house is located in The Kew Gardens Conservation Area, close to The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew a UNESCO World Heritage site. Consequently there are strict planning restrictions relating to period properties and so a sensitive design approach was required. An old Victorian style conservatory was replaced with a new structure to create a contemporary look and maximise both natural light and views and also restore the legibility of the original house. We successfully negotiated with the planners and secured planning approval for a large contemporary and predominantly glazed building which complements the existing Victorian house. We provided a full architectural service for the project from initial design through to administering the building contract. We also designed a bespoke kitchen clad with Statuary marble, new herringbone oak flooring and bespoke living room joinery.

We were commissioned to fully refurbish and extend this splendid Twentieth century house located within a conservation area. The project involved digging a new basement level below the entire house and a loft extension within the existing roof space that added a total of 1500 square feet to the property, providing five bedrooms, four reception rooms with a private gym and a large home study. The exterior of the building was sensitively refurbished with repairs to the brickwork and pointing, new roofs and new double glazed steel windows that were designed to match the original pattern. The interior spaces were re modelled and 3 new staircases designed including a helical feature stair rising through the main house that gives a contemporary, sculptural feel to the circulation space. A new stair between the ground floor kitchen and the basement family room was arranged to create a new dynamic double height volume and connectivity. The services were all replaced including underfloor heating throughout and we carefully designed new lighting to accent the interior spaces with soft yet striking light. As part of the works new bespoke joinery was provided throughout and new bathrooms, kitchens and floor finishes installed. The interior design was by Bridget Reading ID.

We were commissioned to design a substantial 1000 square foot extension to provide a new kitchen, gallery and studio building for a photographer at this fine detached Victorian house, located on a secluded site in Teddington. Working with established planning constraints and a desire to make the new structure subservient to the main house, R+W designed the extension as a series of three structures arranged around a courtyard garden. The studio was set a half level down to give additional head height for a mezzanine guest space above. Large sliding slot windows allow the facades to be opened up with eye level views of the gardens and up into the imposing fir trees. The studio was clad in Shou-Sugi-Ban, (burnt oak cladding) crisply framed with painted metal trims and a pre patinated black zinc roof. The flat roof over the central gallery space has been designed as a bio diverse planted sedum roof that appears at eye level in the courtyard garden. Internally the floors are polished concrete with underfloor heating and a large glazed sliding studio door was made from Crittal steel sections to accentuate the industrial aesthetic. The rendered kitchen extension has fully glazed facades overlooking the gardens and a frameless glass rooflight to maximise natural light penetration into the main house which was fully refurbished.

R+W obtained consent to extend and extensively refurbish a beautiful Grade II Listed former farmhouse located near Henley on Thames. Working with sensitive planning and Listed Building constraints the building envelope was sympathetically restored with new roofing and repairs to the flint panels and brickwork and pointing. A new contemporary frameless glass extension was designed to preserve the legibility of the existing structure and provide more family living space at ground floor. The interiors were remodelled with a new kitchen, bathrooms, bespoke joinery and finishes throughout. We were also involved in extensive external garden works including the design and construction of an Oak framed loggia and recessed patio with seating. The services were all replaced with new plumbing and heating systems and we arranged for the installation of a ground source heat pump.
